CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES.
Moderate loan e x p a n s i o n a g g r e g a t i n g $26,000,000, accompanied by n e t
l i q u i d a t i o n of $15,000,000 of Government s e c u r i t i e s and an i n c r e a s e of
$13,000,000 i n c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s , i s shown i n the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s
weekly s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n on November 1 of 186 member banks i n l e a d i n g
cities,
As a g a i n s t i n c r e a s e s of $36,000,000 i n loans on s t o c k s and bonds and of
$7,000,000 on Government s e c u r i t i e s , a l l o t h e r , l a r g e l y commercial, loans
showed a r e d u c t i o n 0:'' $17,000,000, Member banks i n New York C i t y r e p o r t an i n c r e a s e of $36,000,000 i n l o a n s on stocks and bonds, as a g a i n s t a r e d u c t i o n of
$9,000,000 i n o t h e r l o a n s , and nominal changes i n Government and c o r p o r a t e sec u r i t i e s . T o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of t h e r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s show an
i n c r e a s e f o r t h e week of $24,000,000, while l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of member
banks i n New York C i t y i n c r e a s e d by $29,000,000.
Net withdrawals of Government d e p o s i t s t o t a l e d $33,000,000 f o r the week,
o t h e r demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) i n c r e a s e d $26,000,000 and time d e p o s i t s $14,000,000. Since the end of August n e t demand d e p o s i t s •
i n c r e a s e d by
$246,000,000, while loans and d i s c o u n t s i n c r e a s e d by $514,000,000. The r a t i o
of loans t o demand d e p o s i t s t w h i c h d u r i n g t h e e a r l i e r p a r t of the y e a r showed
a d e c l i n i n g t e n d e n c y , i n c r e a s e d since August 30 from 98 to about 101 p e r cent.
For t h e New York C i t y banks a c o r r e s p o n d i n g r i s e i n t h i s r a t i o from 79 to 82
p e r cent i s shown.
Borrowings of t h e r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s frem the r e s e r v e banks show an
i n c r e a s e from $227,000,000 t o $341,000,000, or frem 1 . 4 to 2 , 2 p e r c e n t of
t h e i r a g g r e g a t e l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s . For the New York City members an i n c r e a s e from $57,000,000 to $126,000,000 i n accommodation a t the l o c a l r e s e r v e
bank and from 1 . 1 to 2 , 5 p e r c e n t i n the r a t i o of accommodation i s noted.
