STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS

Board of Governors
of the Federal Reserve System
May 9, 1938

Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in 101 Leading Cities
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 4s A decrease of
$61,000,000 in commercial, industrial and agricultural loans, an increase of
$123,000,000 in holdings of obligations fully guaranteed by the United States
Government, and a decrease of $69,000,000 in "Other securities"; decreases of
$117,000,000 in reserve balances with Federal Reserve banks and of $148,000,000
in demand deposits-adjusted, and an increase of $88,000,000 in deposits credited
to domestic banks.
Commercial, industrial and agricultural loans declined $32,000,000 in New
York City, $19,000,000 in the Chicago district, and $61,000,000 at all reporting
member banks.
Holdings of United States Government direct obligations increased $21,000,000
in New York City and $11,000,000 in the Richmond district, and declined
$21,000,000 in the Chicago district and $12,000,000 in the Cleveland district, all
reporting member banks showing a net increase of $14,000,000 for the week. Holdings of obligations fully guaranteed by the United States Government increased
$77,000,000 in New York City, $17,000,000 in the Chicago district and $123,000,000
at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "Other securities" declined
$70,000,000 in New York City and $69,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Demand deposits-adjusted declined $123,000,000 in New York City, $36,000,000
in the Chicago district and $14,000,000 in the Cleveland district, and increased
$38,000,000 in the New York district outside New York City and $18,000,000 in
the Boston district and $11,000,000 in the Minneapolis district, all reporting
member banks showing a net decline of $148,000,000 for the week* Time deposits
declined $13,000,000 in New York City and increased $12,000,000 in the San Francisco district, all reporting member banks showing a net decrease of $4,000,000
for the week. Government deposits declined $14,000,000 in New York City and
$17,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Deposits credited to domestic banks increased $23,000,000 in the Chicago district, $11,000,000 in the Cleveland district, $10,000,000 each in New York City
and in the Boston and Richmond districts, and §88,000,000 at all reporting member
banks. Deposits credited to foreign banks declined $9,000,000 in New York City.
Weekly reporting member banks reported no borrowings on May 4.
