BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM H.4.2 (For Immediate Release) May 6, 1959 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows t h e following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended April 29: An increase of $99 m i l l i o n in loans a d j u s t e d ; decreases of $364 m i l l i o n i n holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s , $54 m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d , and $153 m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks; and an increase of $437 m i l l i o n i n U. S. Government d e p o s i t s . Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased $7 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks; t h e p r i n c i p a l changes were decreases of $13 m i l l i o n each i n Chicago and in t h e P h i l a d e l p h i a D i s t r i c t and $12 m i l l i o n in t h e Richmond D i s t r i c t , end an i n c r e a s e of $32 m i l l i o n i n t h e Boston D i s t r i c t . Changes according t o i n d u s t r y appear in another p r e s s r e l e a s e . "Other" loans increased $83 m i l l i o n . Holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased i n a l l c a t e g o r i e s f o r the t h i r d week: Treasury b i l l s by $96 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness $58 m i l l i o n , Treasury n o t e s $75 m i l l i o n , and U. S. Government bonds by $135 m i l l i o n . Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d decreased $192 m i l l i o n i n t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $57 m i l l i o n i n t h e Kansas City D i s t r i c t , and $50 m i l l i o n i n t h e Richmond D i s t r i c t , but they increased $84 m i l l i o n in New York City and $56 m i l l i o n each in Chicago and in t h e P h i l a d e l p h i a D i s t r i c t . Time d e p o s i t s increased a n e t of $49 m i l l i o n and included an increase of $50 m i l l i o n i n d e p o s i t s of S t a t e s and p o l i t i c a l subdivisions i n t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t . Borrowings of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $497 m i l l i o n and borrowings from o t h e r s increased $211 m i l l i o n . Loans t o banks increased $359 m i l l i o n .
