CONDITION OF TJEEKIY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING ;ITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s
shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 23? Decreases of
0205 million in holdings of United States Government securities and $601 million in
demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and an increase of $445 million in
demand deposits adjusted.
Commercial and industrial loans decreased in a l l but one d i s t r i c t and a t o t a l
of $111 million at a l l reporting member banksj the principal changes were decreases
of $60 million in New York City, $11* million in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $12 million each in the Cleveland and Atlanta Districts, and an increase of $12 million in
the San Francisco D i s t r i c t . Changes according to industry appear in another press
release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States
Government and other securities increased $129 million. "Other" loans increased
$33 million.
Holdings of Treasuiy b i l l s decreased $83 million in New York City and a t o t a l
of $102 million at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s
of indebtedness decreased $29 million, Treasury notes $1*1 million, and United States
Government bonds $33 million,
Demand deposits adjusted increased $373 million in New York City, $106 million
in Chicago, and $80 million in the Cleveland District, but they decreased $114 million in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , Time deposits increased $49 million.
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $34 million and borrowings
from others increased $138 million. Loans to banks increased $126 million.
