STATEMENT FOR THE PEESS Released f o r p u b l i c a t i o n Monday morning May 3, 1920; n o t earlier S t . 1125 F e d e r a l Reserve hoard ' May 1, 1920 CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES Heavy w i t h d r a w a l s of d e p o s i t s from r e p o r t i n g banks, a p p a r e n t l y i n r e s p o n s e t o the s p r i n g demand f o r f u n d s i n c o u n t r y d i s t r i c t s , accompanied by s u b s t a n t i a l l i q u i d a t i o n of l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s and i n c r e a s e d borrowings from the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks, a r e i n d i c a t e d by the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n on A p r i l 23 of 811 member banks in l e a d i n g c i t i e s . Holdings of U. S. bonds d e c l i n e d by about 8 m i l l i o n s , w h i l e V i c t o r y n o t e s on hand i n c r e a s e d by 4 . 5 m i l l i o n s . cate Treasury c e r t i f i - h o l d i n g s show a d e c l i n e of 51*^ m i l l i o n s , l a r g e l y i n New York C i t y badks, l o a n s secured by Government war o b l i g a t i o n s - a d e c l i n e of 27*7 m i l l i o n s , and l o a n s secured by s t o c k s and bonds - a d e c l i n e of 3 1 . 9 m i l l i o n s , a l s o l a r g e l y f o r the member banks in New York C i t y . A l l o t h e r l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s were 1 4 . 2 m i l l i o n s l a r g e r than the week b e f o r e . As a consequence of these changes, t o t a l l o a n s and i n - v e s t m e n t s of r e p o r t i n g banks, i n c l u d i n g r e d i s c o u n t s w i t h F e d e r a l Reserve'Banks, show a d e c r e a s e f o r t h e week of 100«2 m i l l i o n s . Government d e p o s i t s were reduced by about 19 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and by 2 0 . 1 m i l l i o n s fot New York C i t y barucs, while o t h e r demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) show a r e d u c t i o n of about 260 m i l l i o n s . Time d e p o s i t s i n c r e a s e d by 1 3 . I m i l l i o n s . Reserve b a l a n c e s w i t h the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks show a d e c l i n e of 23*5 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t ing banks, but o n l y a nominal change f o r t h e New York C i t y members,, and cash i n v a u l t d e c r e a s e d by 2.7 m i l l i o n s . T o t a l accommodation r e c e i v e d by r e p o r t i n g member banks f r a n the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks shows an i n c r e a s e f o r the week of 47«2 m i l l i o n s . B i l l s secured by Government war o b l i g a t i o n s h e l d under d i s c o u n t by F e d e r a l Reserve Banks i n c r e a s e d from 1,190*3 t o 1 , 1 9 4 . 1 m i l l i o n s , -nd o t h e r d i s c o u n t e d paper so h e l d shows an i n c r e a s e from 863*1 t o 906»5 millions.
