BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM H.4.2 (For Immediate Release) May 25, 1949 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows the f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended May 18: Decreases of $161,000,000 i n commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l l o a n s , $268,000,000 i n holdings of Treasury b i l l s , and $280,000,000 i n demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks, and an increase of $563,000,000 i n borrowings, Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans decreased i n nearly a l l d i s t r i c t s ; the p r i n c i p a l decreases were $79,000,000 i n New York City, $23,000,000 i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $19,000,000 i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $11,000,000 each i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a and Cleveland d i s t r i c t s . Loans t o brokers and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying United S t a t e s Government and other s e c u r i t i e s increased $1+12,000,000 i n New York City and a t o t a l of $444,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $129,000,000 i n New York City, $76,000,000 i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $58,000,000 i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and by smaller amounts i n n e a r l y a l l of the other d i s t r i c t s .
