BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM H.4.2 (For Immediate Release) May 20, 1959 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 13: Increases of $389 million in loans adjusted, $1,047 million in holdings of Treasury bills, and $1,387 million in U. S. Government deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased in all districts and a total of $212 million at all reporting member banks; the principal increases were $4l million in the San Francisco District, $36 million in the Chicago District, $26 million in New York City, $25 million in the Philadelphia District, and $20 million in the Cleveland District. Changes according.to industry appear in another press release. Real estate loans increased $63 million and "other" loans increased $76 million. Holdings of Treasury bills increased in all but one district, largely reflecting the first stage of the Treasury1s current refunding and new financing program. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased by $4l million, Treasury notes $136 million, and U. S. Government bonds by $87 million. Holdings of "other" securities decreased $71 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased in seven districts and increased in the others; there was a net decrease of $47 million at all reporting member banks. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $207 million and borrowings from others increased $202 million. Loans to banks increased $152 million.
