CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES D e c l i n e s i n l o a n s secured by s t o c k s and "bonds of millions for a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks and of 38-6 m i l l i o n s f o r Mew York C i t y banks, o f f s e t i n p a r t by i n c r e a s e s i n o t h e r l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s , a r e i n d i c a t e d i n the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s s t a t e r / e n t of c o n d i t i o n on May 7 of 50$ member banks in leading c i t i e s , Demand d e p o s i t s of t h e s e banks and t h e i r borrowings from F e d e r a l Reserve Banks show s u b s t a n t i a l r e d u c t i o n s f o r the week. United S t a t e s bond h o l d i n g s i n c r e a s e d by 6 . 6 m i l l i o n s , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e h o l d i n g s d e c l i n e d by 12*7 m i l l i o n s , w h i l e V i c t o r y n o t e s and l o a n s secured by Government war o b l i g a t i o n s show but nominal c h a n g e s . The r e d u c t i o n i n l o a n s s e c u r e d by s t o c k s and bonds was 35 .2 m i l l i o n s i n F e d e r a l Reserve Bank c i t i e s , but was o f f s e t i n p a r t by i n c r e a s e s r e p o r t e d by member banks o u t s i d e of t h e s e c i t i e s , All o t h e r l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s i n c r e a s e d by about 21 mil^ l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and by 19*6 m i l l i o n s f o r the New York City . members. As a consequence of t h e s e c h a n g e s t o t a l l o a n s and investments ( i n - c l u d i n g paper h e l d under r e d i s c o u n t w i t h F e d e r a l Reserve Banks) a r e shown 16*3 m i l l i o n s below the f i g u r e f o r the week b e f o r e , though about 367 m i l l i o n s i n excess, of the t o t a l f o r the f i r s t F r i d a y i n the y e a r . Total accommodations to a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks a s shown on the books of the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks show a d e c l i n e of 44.7 m i l l i o n s f o r the week. B i l l s s e c u r e d by Government war o b l i g a t i o n s d i s c o u n t e d by t h e Reserve banks f o £ the r e p o r t i n g member banks d e c r e a s e d from 1,206*7 to 1,177*5 m i l l i o n s , and o t h e r b i l l s from 929-6 to 914.1 m i l l i o n s * Since the beginning of the y e a r t h e r e has been a c o r r e s p o n d i n g r e d u c t i o n of 32-4 m i l l i o n s i n b i l l s secured by Government war o b l i g a t i o n s as a g a i n s t an i n c r e a s e of 253 1 5 m i l l i o n s i n other b i l l s h e l d under r e d i s c o u n t f o r r e p o r t i n g member b a n k s . Government d e p o s i t s show a r e d u c t i o n of 5-3 m i l l i o n s , other^demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) - a r e d u c t i o n of 72*3 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks/of 74*4 m i l l i o n s f o r the banks i n New York C i t y , while time d e p o s i t s i n c r e a s e d by 1c -7 millions.
