CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s
shows t h e following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended May 6 : Decreases of
$384 m i l l i o n i n holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s and $1,573 m i l l i o n in
demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d ; and i n c r e a s e s of $466 m i l l i o n i n demand deposits c r e d i t e d
t o domestic banks and $335 m i l l i o n in borrowings of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks
from Federal Reserve Banks.
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased $139 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member
banks; the p r i n c i p a l changes were increases of $57 m i l l i o n i n t h e San Francisco
D i s t r i c t , $35 m i l l i o n i n New York City, $30 m i l l i o n i n Chicago, and $14 m i l l i o n in
t h e P h i l a d e l p h i a D i s t r i c t , and a decrease of $12 m i l l i o n in t h e Cleveland D i s t r i c t .
Changes according t o i n d u s t r y appear in another p r e s s r e l e a s e . Real e s t a t e loans
increased $28 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased in a l l c a t e g o r i e s f o r the
f o u r t h week; Treasury b i l l s by $169 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness
$44 m i l l i o n , Treasury notes $130 m i l l i o n , and U. S. Government bonds by $4l m i l l i o n .
Holdings of "other" s e c u r i t i e s decreased $174 m i l l i o n .
Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d decreased $704 m i l l i o n i n New York City, $223 m i l l i o n
in t h e Chicago D i s t r i c t , $142 m i l l i o n in t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $109 million
in t h e Dallas D i s t r i c t , $104 m i l l i o n in t h e Cleveland D i s t r i c t , $100 m i l l i o n in
the Boston D i s t r i c t , and by smaller amounts i n a l l but one of t h e other d i s t r i c t s .
U. S. Government d e p o s i t s increased $130 m i l l i o n .
Borrowings from other than Federal Reserve Banks decreased $244 m i l l i o n ; and
loans t o banks decreased $302 m i l l i o n .
