CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 4: A decrease of $412
million in holdings of United States Government securities; increases of $393 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $405 million in United States
Government deposits, and $166 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks;
and a decrease of $ 9 8 8 million in demand deposits adjusted.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased $62 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were increases of $27 million in New
York City, $18 million in the San Francisco District, and $12 million in the Cleveland District, and a decrease of $24 million in the Minneapolis District. Changes
according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and
dealers for purchasing or carrying securities increased $57 million. "Other" loans
increased $49 million.
Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $153 million in New York City and a total
of $233 million at all reporting member banks» Holdings of Treasury certificates of
indebtedness decreased $56 million in the San Francisco District and a total of $128
million. Holdings of "other" securities decreased $94 million of which $77 million
was in New York City.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased in all districts; the principal decreases
were $347 million in New York City, $207 million in the Chicago District, $87 million in the Cleveland District, and $66 million in the St. Louis District.
Borrowings increased in five districts, including $255 million in New York
City, and decreased or were unchanged in the other districts; the net increase was
$119 million at all reporting member banks. Loans to banks decreased $196 million.
