CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 4: An increase of
$259,000,000 in holdings of United States Government bonds, decreases of
$186,000,000 in commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans and $353,000,000 in
demand deposits adjusted, and increases of $517,000,000 in demand deposits credited
to domestic banks and $322,000,000 in borrowings.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased in nearly all districts-*
the principal decreases were $72,000,000 in New York City and $35,000,000 in the
Kansas City District. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying
United States Government securities increased $168,000,000 in New York City.
Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $69,000,000 in New York City, and increased$44,000,000 in the Kansas City District and $38,000,000 in the Minneapolis
District; the net increase at all reporting member banks was $9,000,000. Holdings
of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $38,000,000. Holdings of United
States Government bonds increased in all districts; the principal increases were
$86,000,000 in New York City, $51,000,000 in the San Francisco District, and
$34,000,000 in the Cleveland District.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased $209,000,000 in New York City, $63,000,000
in the Chicago District, and by smaller amounts in most of the other districts.
United States Government deposits decreased $125,000,000. Demand deposits credited
to domestic banks increased in all districts; the principal increases were
$99,000,000 each in New York City and in the Kansas City District.
Borrowings increased $314,000,000 in New York City and $52,000,000 in the
Chicago District.
