CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended February 27: Decreases
of $247 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $314 million in
United States Government deposits, and $126 million in demand deposits credited to
domestic banks, and an increase of $126 million in demand deposits adjusted.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in six districts and
decreased in the other six, resulting in a net increase of $9 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were an increase of $25 million in New York
City and decreases of $9 million each in the Chicago and San Francisco districts.
The changes according to industry and purpose are available in another press release.
Loans to banks increased $136 million.
Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $32 million. Holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $56 million, of which $ 3 8 million
was in New York City. Holdings of "other securities" increased $27 million in New
York City, $11 million in the San Francisco District, and a total of $43 million at
all reporting member banks.
Demand deposits adjusted increased $249 million in New York City, $ 7 2 million
in the Chicago District, and $42 million in the Cleveland District, but they decreased $138 million in the San Francisco District, $43 million in the New York
District outside of New York City, and $4l million in the Kansas City District.
Time deposits increased $43 million, largely in the San Francisco District.
Borrowings increased $125 million in the San Francisco District but they decreased $48 million in New York City; the net increase at all reporting member banks
was $44 million.
