CONDITION OF MEMBER EAIC13 IN LEADING CITIES
Aggregate i n c r e a s e s of $105,000,000 i n Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , a l s o of
$42,000,000 i n loans secured by stocks and bonds, a s a g a i n s t reductions of
$15,000,000 i n o t h e r , l a r g e l y commercial, loans and of $14,000,000 i n other i n vestments, are the leading f e a t u r e s of member bank development ior tne week ending
March 21, as shown by the Federal Beserve Board's l a t e s t consolidated statement
of condition of 777 member banks i n leading c i t i e s . Issuance on March 15 of over
$475,000,000 of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s accountsfor the s u b s t a n t i a l i n c r e a s e i n
member bank holdings of t h i s c l a s s of s e c u r i t i e s , while tne i n c r e a s e of loans
a g a i n s t stocks and bonds was l i m i t e d almost e x c l u s i v e l y to member banks i n New York
City.* These l a t t e r show i n c r e a s e s of $37,000,000 i n Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s and of
$47,000,000 i n loans a g a i n s t stocks and bonds, as against r e d u c t i o n s of $17,000,000
i n other loans and discounts and/$19,000,000 i n other investments. Total loans and
investments show an i n c r e a s e of $118,000,000 f o r the week, the corresponding increase
for the New York City banks being $48,000,000,
In connection with the l a r g e Treasury operations of the week Government dep o s i t s of the r e p o r t i n g banks advanced $215,000,000. Other demand d e p o s i t s (net)
on the other hand, declined by $280,000,000, while time d e p o s i t s show an i n c r e a s e
of $32,000,000, For t h e New York City banks i n c r e a s e s of $102,000,000 i n Government
deposits and of $31,000,000 i n time d e p o s i t s , as against a r e d u c t i o n of $97,000,000
i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s are noted,
Borrowings of the r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s from the Federal reserve banks i n creased during the week from $405,000,000 to $416,000,000, the r a t i o of these
borrowings to the banks' t o t a l loans and investments continuing unchanged a t 2.5 P®r
cent. For the New York City banks a decrease i n these borrowings from $152,000,000
to $110,000,000 and from 2.9 to 2 . 1 p e r cent i n the r a t i o of these borrowings to
t o t a l loans and investments i s shown.
In keeping with the s u b s t a n t i a l r e d u c t i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s the r e p o r t i n g
banks show a decrease of $5b,000,000 - those of New York City a decrease of
$33,000,000 - i n t h e i r reserve balances with the Federal r e s e r v e banks, Cash i n
v a u l t shows a decline of $12,000,000 f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and a decline of about
$1,000,000 f o r the member banks i n New York City.
