CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s
shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended February 24: Decreases of
$339 million in loans, $391 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks,
and $370 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks.
Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans decreased i n a l l but the
Richmond D i s t r i c t and a t o t a l of $109 million a t a l l reporting member banks; the
p r i n c i p a l changes were decreases of $53 million in New York City and $15 million
i n Chicago. Changes according t o industry appear in another p r e s s r e l e a s e . Loans
t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing pr carrying s e c u r i t i e s decreased $295 million.
Loans t o banks increased $72 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $156 million in New York City and decreased in e i g h t d i s t r i c t s , r e s u l t i n g in a net increase of $142 million a t a l l
reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness and of
Treasury notes decreased $19 million and $103 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of
United S t a t e s Government bonds increased in most d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $110
million a t a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of "other" s e c u r i t i e s increased
$8l m i l l i o n , of which $48 million was in New York City.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased in six d i s t r i c t s and increased i n the
others, r e s u l t i n g i n a net decrease of $105 million a t a l l reporting member banks;
the p r i n c i p a l changes were decreased of $87 million in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t
and $63 million in New York City, and increases of $56 million In the Chicago Dist r i c t and $41 million in the Philadelphia D i s t r i c t . Time deposits increased $50
million.
Borrowings decreased $93 million in Chicago and increased $91 million in the
San Francisco D i s t r i c t ; t h e r e was a net decrease of $4 million a t a l l reporting
member banks.
