March 26, 1921.CONDITIO# OF.MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES Aggregate i n c r e a s e s of 151 m i l l i o n s in investments, of which 137 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s an i n c r e a s e in the holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , as a g a i n s t f u r t h e r l i q u i d a t i o n of m i l l i o n s of loans and d i s c o u n t s , a r e indicated in the Federal Reserve Board's weekly statement of condition on March 18 of 824 member harilcs i n leading cities, All c l a s s e s of loans show r e d u c t i o n s for the week: loans secured by U, S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s - by 9 m i l l i o n s ; loans secured by corporate o b l i g a t i o n s - by 17 m i l l i o n s , .and a l l other loans and. d i s c o u n t s , l a r g e l y of a commercial character - by 29 m i l l i o n s - -Corresponding reduction's of 15, l4 and 20 m i l l i o n s are shown for member banks i n New York C i t y . Following the l a r g e c e r t i f i c a t e transactions'-%f the week, r e p o r t i n g banks show ar i n c r e a s e of 137 m i l l i o n s i n t h e i r holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , while t h e i r holdings of other Government s e c u r i t i e s show no appreciable change. Holdings of other bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s show an i n c r e a s e of l 4 m i l l i o n s ' For^the New York City banks i n c r e a s e s ef 51 m i l l i o n s in c e r t i f i c a t e s / 0 1 8 m i l l i o n s i n other stocks and bonds, as a g a i n s t a decrease of 3 m i l l i o n s i n other U., S. s e c u r i t i e s , are shown, As a consequence of the above changes, t o t a l loans and investments of a l l r e p o r t i n g banks show an increase of $8 m i l l i o n s , and those of New York member banks - an i n crease of 37 m i l l i o n s . Accommodation of r e p o r t i n g banks at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased during the week from 1,854 to 1,719 m i l l i o n s and c o n s t i - . tuted 10,7 par cent of the banks 1 t o t a l loans and investments,, compared with 11.6 per cent the week b e f o r e - For the New York banks decreases from 759 to 651 m i l l i o n s i n accommodation and from 15*1 to 12.4 per cent i n the r a t i o of accomodation are notedIn consequence. of the lar^e.
