CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER B A M S IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended March 15: Increases of
$414,000,000 in holdings of United States Government securities, $380,000,000 in
reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $295,000,000 in balances with domestic
banks, $525,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted, $433,000,000 in United States
Government deposits, and $349,000,000 in demand deposits credited to domestic banks.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased $35,000,000 in New
York City, $18,000,000 in the Chicago District, $11,000,000 in the Cleveland District, and a total of $91,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Holdings of Treasury notes increased $882,000,000 and holdings of United States
Government bonds decreased $785,000,000, partially reflecting the exchange of bonds
called for redemption for a new note issue.
Holdings of Treasury bills increased
$173»000,000 in New York City, $66,000,000 in the San Francisco District, $63,000,000
in the Chicago District, and a total of $370,000,000 at all reporting member banks# \
Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $53,000,000.
Demand deposits adjusted increased $206,000,000 in New York City, $149,000,000
in the San Francisco District, $60,000,000 in the Kansas City District, $50,000,000
in the Chicago District outside of Chicago, and by smaller amounts in most of the
Other districts. United States Government deposits increased in nearly all districts.
Demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased $209,000,000 in New York City
and $50,000,000 in the Chicago District.
Borrowings decreased $88,000,000 in New York City, $32,000,000 in the San
Francisco District,and a total of $147,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
