CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended February 23: Decreases of
$307 million in holdings of United States Government securities, $3ii6 million in
reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, and $591 million in demand deposits
credited to domestic banks, and an increase of $ll;6 million in demand deposits
adjusted.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased in seven districts
and increased in the others, resulting in a net decrease of $15 million at all
reporting member banksj the principal changes were decreases of $13 million in the
Dallas District and $12 million in the Chicago District, and increases of $16 million in New York City and $11 million in the Cleveland District. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for
purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities decreased
$128 million.
Holdings of Treasury bills increased $112 million in the San Francisco District and decreased $91 million in New York City and $36 million in the Kansas
City District; there was a net decrease of $60 million at all reporting member
banks. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness and of United States
Government bonds decreased $156 million and $75 million, respectively. Holdings
of "other" securities increased $77 million, of which $66 million was in New York
City.
Demand deposits adjusted increased in eight districts; the largest increase
was $66 million in the Chicago District.
Borrowings decreased $58 million at all reporting member banks.
