BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) March 18, 1953 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s f 65 ^ U i o n i n demand deposits adjusted, and $271 million in borrowings, and a decrease of $672 million in United States Government deposits* Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and agricultural loans increased milliari in New SB creased $56 million* Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased in s i x d i s t r i c t s and decreased in the other s i x , r e s u l t i n g In a net Increase of W k million at a l l reporting mmtor banks Holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $57 m i l l i o n . Holdings "other securities" increased $55 m i l l i o n . Demand deposits adjusted increased in a l l d i s t r i c t s ? the principal increases were $305 million i n New York City, $178 million in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $165 mill i o n in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $60 million in the Philadelphia D ^ t r i c t , and $Ul million in the Richmond D i s t r i c t .
