BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEOBAL RESERVE SYSTEM H.4.2 (For Immediate Release) March 12, 1958 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended March 5$ An increase of $851 million in holdings of U. S, Government securities; decreases of $207 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks and $440 million in demand deposits adjusted; and increases of $2?0 million in time deposits and $711 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial and industrial loans decreased $147 million in New York City, $46 million in the San Francisco District, and a total of $210 million at all reporting member banks. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government and other securities increased $385 million of which $312 million was in New York City, Holdings of Treasury bills increased $411 million. Holdings of U, S, Government bonds increased in all districts and a total of $388 million, largely reflecting the purchase of a new issue. Holdings of "other1* securities increased $97 million in New York City, $32 million in Chicago, and a total of $211 million at all reporting member banks. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $119 million in the Chicago District, $64 million in the Dallas District, $57 million in the Richmond District, and $55 million in the Atlanta District, Time deposits increased $101 million in New York City. U, S, Government deposits increased $105 million. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $23 million and borrowings from others increased $388 million.
