H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) June 4, 1958 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES Tho condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 28; Increases of $247 million i n holdings of U, S, Government securities and $742 million in demand deposits adjusted and a decrease of $349 million i n U. S, Government deposits. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in most d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $141 million at a l l reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $66 million in New York City, $30 million i n Chicago, $13 million i n the St, Louis D i s t r i c t , and $12 million in the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U, S, Government and other securities increased $147 million, "Other'* loans increased $28 million. Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $89 million, Treasury notes $86 mill i o n , and U, S, Government bonds $92 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $447 million i n New York City, $118 mill i o n in Chicago, and $57 million in the Dallas D i s t r i c t , but they decreased $49 million in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , Time deposits increased $130 million, of which $83 million was in New York City. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $14 million and borrowings from others decreased $31 million. Loans to banks decreased $30 million.
