CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks in leading c i t i e s
shows t h e following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended May 27: Decreases of
$254 m i l l i o n i n holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s and $609 m i l l i o n in U. S.
Government d e p o s i t s , and an increase of $488 m i l l i o n in demand deposits a d j u s t e d .
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased $16 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member
banks; t h e p r i n c i p a l changes were decreases of $13 m i l l i o n in t h e S t . Louis
D i s t r i c t and $11 m i l l i o n in Chicago, and i n c r e a s e s of $15 m i l l i o n in the Cleveland
D i s t r i c t and $10 m i l l i o n in t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t . Changes according t o
i n d u s t r y appear i n another p r e s s r e l e a s e . Loans t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r p u r chasing or carrying U. S. Government and other s e c u r i t i e s decreased $125 m i l l i o n .
"Other" loans increased $76 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s decreased in a l l c a t e g o r i e s : Treasury
b i l l s by $171 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness $18 m i l l i o n , Treasury
notes $55 m i l l i o n , and U. S. Government bonds by $10 m i l l i o n . Holdings of "other"
s e c u r i t i e s increased $43 m i l l i o n .
Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d increased $227 m i l l i o n in New York City, $159 m i l l i o n
in Chicago, and $70 m i l l i o n in t h e Cleveland D i s t r i c t . Time d e p o s i t s increased
$22 m i l l i o n . Demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks decreased $413 m i l l i o n .
Borrowings of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks from Federal Reserve Banks
increased $142 m i l l i o n and borrowings from o t h e r s increased $148 m i l l i o n . Loans t o
banks decreased $50 m i l l i o n .
