BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) June 3 , 1953 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES H.U.2 The condition statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended May 27: An i n c r e a s e of $80$ m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d and decreases of $518 m i l l i o n i n United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s and $1*02 m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks* Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans' decreased i n a l l d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $129 m i l l i o n at a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks; the p r i n c i p a l decreases were $62 m i l l i o n i n New York C i t y , $12 m i l l i o n i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $11 m i l l i o n i n t h e S t . Louis D i s t r i c t * Loans t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or carrying s e c u r i t i e s decreased $61 m i l l i o n , "Other loans" increased $1*9 m i l l i o n . Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $72 m i l l i o n i n New York C i t y , but they decreased by smaller amounts i n most of the other d i s t r i c t s ; t h e net i n c r e a s e a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks was t s 21 million# Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds decreased $67 m i l l i o n i n New York City and increased #1$ m i l l i o n i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t ; t h e r e was a net decrease of $61 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g banks* Holdings of " o t h e r s e c u r i t i e s " increased i n most d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l of $53 mill i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d increased i n a l l but one d i s t r i c t ; the p r i n c i p a l i n c r e a s e s were $3^7 m i l l i o n i n New York City* $196 m i l l i o n i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and $51 m i l l i o n i n the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , Time d e p o s i t s increased $1*9 m i l l i o n .
