STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS

June 20, 1938

Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in 101 Leading Cities
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended June 15* Decreases of
$210,000,000 in loans to brokers and dealers in securities and $46,000,000 in loans
to banks, and an increase of $141,000,000 in holdings of United States Government
direct obligations.
Commercial, industrial and agricultural loans declined $4,000,000. Loans to
brokers and dealers declined $192,000,000 in New York City, $13,000,000 in the
Chicago district and $210,000,000 at all reporting member banks* Loans to banks
declined $46,000,000 in New York City,
Holdings of United States Government direct obligations increased $64^000,000
in New York City, $22,000,000 in the Philadelphia district, $17,000,000 in the
Richmond district, and $141,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of
obligations fully guaranteed by the United States Government increased $9,000,000
in New York City, $12,000,000 in the Chicago district and $17,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "Other securities" increased $8,000,000 in New
York City, $5,000,000 in the Chicago district and $28,000,000 at all reporting
member banks.
Demand deposits-adjusted declined $56,000,000 in New York City and $20,000,000
in the Philadelphia district, and increased $28,000,000 in the New York district
outside New York City and $29,000,000 in the San Francisco district, all reporting
member banks showing a net increase of $31,000,000 for the week. Government
deposits declined $9,000,000 in New York City, $6,000,000 in the Chicago district
and $14,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Deposits credited to domestic banks changed relatively little during the week,
all reporting member banks showed a net increase of $21,000,000,
Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks in New York City declined
$22,000,000, Borrowings of all reporting member banks were $1,000,000 on June 15,
