H.U.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) June 17, 1953 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended June 10: Increases of $227 million i n l o a n s , $233 million i n holdings of Treasury b i l l s , $323 million i n reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $257 million i n balances with domestic banks, $1,192 million i n demand deposits a d j u s t e d , and *>275 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and a decrease of $238 million i n United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s . Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans increased # 2 million at a l l reporting member banksj the p r i n c i p a l changes were an increase of $65 million i n New York City and a decrease of %,12 million i n t h e Cleveland D i s t r i c t . Changes according to industry appear i n another press r e l e a s e . Loans t o brokers and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying s e c u r i t i e s increased $215 m i l l i o n . Loans to banks decreased $61 m i l l i o n . "Other loans" increased $25 m i l l i o n . Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $208 million i n the New York D i s t r i c t and decreased $kk million i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t outside of Chicago. Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $23 m i l l i o n . Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds increased $Lk million i n New York City and decreased $19 million i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t j the net increase a t a l l reporting member banks was $36 m i l l i o n . Demand deposits adjusted increased $512 million i n New York City, $136 million i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $120 million i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $79 million i n the Richmond D i s t r i c t , and by smaller amounts i n a l l of the other d i s t r i c t s . Time deposits increased $U2 m i l l i o n . Borrowings decreased $98 million i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t and by smaller amounts i n most of the other d i s t r i c t s , but they increased $117 million i n New York City j the net decrease at a l l reporting member banks was $120 million..
