MEMBER BANKS IM LEADING CITIES. L i q u i d a t i o n of $10%,000,000 . of loans and d i s c o u n t s , accompanied by commensurate d e c l i n e s i n demand and time d e p o s i t s , and a moderate d e c r e a s e i n borrowings from the Federal Reserve banks, a r e i n d i c a t e d i n the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s weekly c o n s o l i d a t e d statement of cond i t i o n on June 8 of SIS member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . Loans secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n s show a r e d u c t i o n f o r the week of $38,000,000, loans secured by c o r p o r a t e stocks and bonds dec l i n e d by $ 19,000,000, w h i l e a l l other loans and d i s c o u n t s , composed l a r g e l y of commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans proper, f e l l off $50,000,000. For member, banks i n New York City, d e c r e a s e s of $35,000,000 i n loans secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n ^ , o f $27,000,000 i n loans supported by c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s , and of $24,000,000 i n o t h e r , l a r g e l y cacmercial l o a n s , are shown. The banks r e p o r t a l s o net l i q u i d a t i o n of $16,000,000 cf Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s and of $6,000,000 of o t h e r Government s e c u r i t i e s , as a g a i n s t an i n c r e a s e of $21,000,000 i n t h e i r holdings of c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s . In New York City, n e t l i q u i d a t i o n of $6,000,000 i n Government s e c u r i t i e s i s o f f s e t by an i n c r e a s e of $6,000,000 i n the holdings of c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s . As a consequence of these changes, the banks' t o t a l loans and investments a r e shown $108,000,000 l e s s than the week b e f o r e , and $1,7^7,000,000, or 10 p e r cent, below the t o t a l r e p o r t e d on June 11 of l a s t y e a r . For member banks i n New York City, a r e d u c t i o n of $85,000,000 i n t o t a l l o a n s and investments i s shown s i n c e the previous Wednesday, w h i l e , as compared w i t h the June 11, 1920 t o t a l , a decrease of .$855,000,000, or of 15 p e r c e n t , i s n o t e d . Accommodation of r e p o r t i n g banks a t the F e d e r a l Reserve banks shows a decrease f o r the week from $1,385,000,000 to $1,358,000,000, or from 9-1 to 8 . 9 p e r cent of the r e p o r t i n g banks' t o t a l loans and i n v e s t m e n t s . For the New York City banks, a decrease i n accommodation a t the l o c a l Federal Reserve bank from $423,000,000 to $393,000,000, and of the r a t i o of accommodation from 8 . 7 to 8 . 2 per c e n t , i s noted. Net withdrawals of Government d e p o s i t s . f o r the week t o t a l e d $4-9,000,000. Other demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) d e c l i n e d by $64,000,000, and time d e p o s i t s by $4,000,000. At the New York City banks, Government d e p o s i t s d e c l i n e d by $21,000,000, other demand d e p o s i t s - by $55,000,000, and time d e p o s i t s - by $1,000,000. Notwithstanding the s u b s t a n t i a l d e c r e a s e i n d e p o s i t l i a b i l i t i e s of r e p o r t i n g member banks, t h e i r r e s e r v e balances with the F e d e r a l Reserve banks show an i n c r e a s e of $24,000,000 f o r the week, the New York City banks alone r e p o r t i n g an i n c r e a s e of $20,000,000 i n t h i s item.
