H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) June 12, 1957 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended June 5: A decrease of $846 million in U. S. Government deposits, and an increase of $767 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial and industrial loans increased $35 million in New York City, $27 million in Chicago, $16 million in the San Francisco District, and a total of $89 million at all reporting member banks. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. All categories of securities decreased. Treasury bills decreased $27 million, Treasury certificates of indebtedness $20 million, Treasury notes $10 million, and U, S, Government bonds $31 million; holdings of "other" securities decreased $22 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $171 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were an increase of $266 million in New York City and decreases of $73 million in the Chicago District outside of Chicago, $65 million in the Cleveland District, and $40 million each in the Kansas City and Dallas Districts. Time deposits increased $50 million, of which $24 million was in deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations in the San Francisco District. U. S. Government deposits decreased and demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased in all districts. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $322 million, and borrowings from others increased $260 million.
