C o n s i d e r a b l e r e d a c t i o n s i n demand d e p o s i t s f o l l o w i n g the payment of checks
and d r a f t s drawn i n payment of June 15 t a x e s , t o g e t h e r w i t h s u b s t a n t i a l i n c r e a s e s
i n borrowings from F e d e r a l Reserve banks . a l s o moderate i n c r e a s e s in consnercial
l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s a r e i n d i c a t e d i n the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s weekly stateme
of c o n d i t i o n on June 25 of 813 member banks in l e a d i n g c i t i e s .
T r e a s u r y c e r t i f i c a t e h o l d i n g s show a d e c l i n e of 2J.6 m i l l i o n s (about 10
m i l l i o n s i n Few York C i t y ) w h i l e changes i n o t h e r U n i t e d S t a t e s s e c u r i t i e s and
i n l o a n s s u p p o r t e d by such s e c u r i t i e s were merely n o m i n a l .

r e p o r t i n g banks, and of 8 . 8 m i l l i o n s f o r the banks i n New York C i t y .

As a con-

sequence, t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s tif a l l r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s show an i n c r e a s e of l U . l m i l l i o n s , of which 5 - 3 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s the i n c r e a s e of the
New York City b a n k s .
Government d e p o s i t s at the c l o s e of the week Were 4 , 7 m i l l i o n s l e s s than
a t the b e g i n n i n g , o t h e r demand d e p o s i t s show a d e c l i n e of 1 7 1 . 2 m i l l i o n s f o r
r e p o r t i n g banks ( 5 5 . 8 m i l l i o n s f o r the New York C i t y b a n k s ) , w h i l e time d e p o s i t s
show a gain f o r the week of 7*3 m i l l i o n s .

T o t a l accommodation t o reporting, banks,

a s shown on the books of the F e d e r a l Reserve b a n k s , i n c r e a s e d from 1833*3 to
1945.9 m i l l i o n s .

S l i g h t l y over 50 p e r c e n t of t h e p a p e r h e l d was secured by

U n i t e d S t a t e s war o b l i g a t i o n s .

For the New York C i t y banks an i n c r e a s e under

t h i s head from 550,1 to 611.8 m i l l i o n s i s shown.

The r a t i o of accommodation a t

t h e F e d e r a l Reserve banks to t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of r e p o r t i n g banks
shows a r i s e from 1 0 . 8 t o 1 1 . 4 p e r c e n t .

For the New York C i t y banks an i n -

c r e a s e i n t h i s r a t i o from 9 . 5 t o 10*6 p e r c e n t I s n o t e d ,
I n c o n n e c t i o n w i t h the i n c r e a s e i n borrowings t h e r e i s shown an i n c r e a s e
