Aggregate reductions of $23,000,000 in investments and a nominal dec l i n e in t o t a l l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , aa against increases of $109 >000,000 in net demand d e p o s i t s and of $37,000,000 in reserve balances, are shown in the Federal Reserve Board's weekly statement of condition on July 12 of 796 member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . Loans secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n s decreased by $16,000,000, and loans secured by corporate and other o b l i g a t i o n s - by §14,000,000, while other loans and d i s c o u n t s , l a r g e l y of a commercial character, show an increase f o r the week of $29,000,000. Changes i n investments include i n c r e a s e s of $2,000,000 i n Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s and of $3,000,000 in U. S. bonds and Victory notes, and reductions of $18,000,000 i n Treasury notes and of $20,000,000 i n corporate s e c u r i t i e s . Leading changes during the week shown f o r member banks i n New York City include net l i q u i d a t i o n of $35»000,000 of loans secured by corporate o b l i g a t i o n s and of $7,000,000 of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , as a g a i n s t an increase of $8,000,000 in other investments. Total loans and investments show decreases of $29,000,000 f o r a l l reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s and of $3*4,000,000 f o r the New York City banks. In addition to the s u b s t a n t i a l increase i n demand d e p o s i t s a further . gain of $6,000,000 in time d e p o s i t s i s shown as against a d e c l i n e of about $11,000,000 in Government d e p o s i t s . Since January % of the present year, demand d e p o s i t s of the reporting banks have gone up $781,000,000 and t h e i r time d e p o s i t s - $465,000,000, t h e i r investments have increased by $807,000,000, while t h e i r loans and discounts have d e c l i n e d by $367,000,000. P a r t l y i n connection w i t h the return flow to the banks of currency a f t e r the July 4 holiday,borrowings of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s from the Federal reserve banks show a decrep.se f o r the week from $206,000,000 to $142,000,000, or from 1 , 4 to 0 , 9 per cent oS "•. • t o t a l loans and investments. For the New York City banks a reduction from $77,000,000 to $47,000,.000 i n accommodation at the l o c a l reserve bank and from 1 , 5 to 0 - 9 per cent i n the r a t i o of accommodation i s noted. Reserve balances, i n keeping with the s u b s t a n t i a l increase in. d e p o s i t l i a b i l i t i e s of the reporting banks, show an increase of $37,000,000 while cash in vault shows a further increase f o r the week of $10,000,000. Member banks i n New York City report an increase of $41,000,000 i n reserve balances and of $3,000,000 i n cash on hand.
