WEEKLY CONDITION REPORT OF LARGE COMMERCIAL BANKS

Beginning with this release, the Condition Statement of Weekly Reporting
Member Banks is revised in format and coverage.
The panel of respondent hanks in the series is being changed. With minor
exceptions, all banks in the revised series have total deposits greater than $100 million. Almost all banks in the previous series with deposits below $100 million are
being dropped from the new panel, and nonmember and member banks with deposits above
that level not in the previous series are being added. While not all member and
nonmember commercial banks with deposits in excess of $100 million report weekly, the
revised series covers essentially all assets of commercial banks with deposits in excess
of $100 million. As a result, the name of the series is being changed to Weekly Condition
Report of Large Commercial Banks.
Accumulated adjustments originally made to eliminate the effect of mergers
on the old series have been eliminated. Adjustments will be made in the new series
as mergers occur, but at the end of each year such adjustments will be eliminated
rather than carried from year to year.
For the city of Chicago series, the change in the reporting panel adds
about $230 million total assets. In the published New York City series, no changes
are being made in the panel of respondent banks. (New respondents in New York City
will be included in the published national and District series.) Elimination of
adjustments for mergers adds about $258 million total assets to the New York City
series. For the national series the change in the reporting panel adds $12.2 billion
total assets and the elimination of adjustments adds $3-4 billion.
In addition to the above revisions more detailed data are now reported by
respondent banks. Thus, "Consumer instalment loans" and "Loans to foreign governments,
official institutions, etc."—previously included in "Other loans" are shown separately.
The "Other securities" category is expanded to show "Obligations of States and political
subdivisions," segregated between "Tax warrants and short-term notes and bills" and
"All other obligations of States and political subdivisions." A new category, "Other
bonds, corporate stocks, and securities"—which also had been included in "Other
securities"—is subdivided into "Certificates of participation in Federal agency
loans" and "All other (including corporate stocks)." The latter category includes
Federal agency securities other than loan participations. Some of the assets
included in the new "Certificates of participation in Federal agency loans" had
been classified as loans. Commodity Credit Corporation certificates of interest
had been included in "Agricultural loans" and Export-Import Bank participations in
"All other loans."
The memorandum item "Negotiable time certificates of deposit issued in
denominations of $100,000 or more" is broken down into those "Issued to individuals,
partnerships, and corporations" and those 'Issued to others." Minor changes are
being made in the format of the published condition statement, which is now shown
in traditional balance sheet form. Items derived for special analytical purposes
are shown at the bottom of the statement as memoranda items.
•• ' >

Directly comparable year-ago data for new detail items are now available
for the new series; year-ago data for other items has been estimated to reflect the
change in the reporting panel and the elimination of adjustments for mergers. Published week-ago figures are comparable in all respects.
A more detailed discussion of the new series will be published in a
forthcoming issue of the Federal Reserve Bulletin.
