CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER. BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended January 2: Decreases of
$3^2 million in loans and $383 million in holdings of Treasury bills; increases
of $432 million in balances with domestic banks and $1,111 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks; and decreases of $689 million in demand deposits adjusted and $683 million in borrowings.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased over the year-end,
as they have in 11 of the previous 13 years. There was a total decrease of $173
million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $77 million
in New York City, $22 million in the Boston District, $21 million in the San
Francisco District, and $18 million in Chicago. An analysis of the changes in
the loans according to industry of borrower and purpose of loans is available in
another press release. Nearly all of the other loan categories showed decreases.
Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $65 million in the San Francisco
District, $63 million in the Kansas City District, $51 million in the Dallas
District, $47 million in the Chicago District, and by smaller amounts in all of
the other districts. Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $58
million, of which $44 million was in New York City.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased in all but one district; the principal
decreases were $290 million in New York City, $165 million in the Chicago District,
$67 million in the Richmond District, $58 million in the Philadelphia District, and
$47 million in the St. Louis District* Time deposits increased $37 million.
Borrowings decreased $260 million in New York City, $239 million in the San
Francisco District, and $185 million in the Chicago District.
