CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
A l l o t m e n t on J a n u a r y 15 of over 310 m i l l i o n s of T r e a s u r y c e r t i f i c a t e s and f u r t h e r l i q u i d a t i o n of commercial l o a n s a r e m a i n l y r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h e p r i n c i p a l changes i n t h e c o n d i t i o n on J a n u a r y 21
of t h e 829 r e p o r t i n g member b a n k s a s shown i n t h e F e d e r a l R e s e r v e
B o a r d ' s c o n s o l i d a t e d s t a t e m e n t . P u r c h a s e s of t h e newly i s s u e d c e r t i f i c a t e s by u l t i m a t e i n v e s t o r s were u n u s u a l l y l a r g e , and t h e r e were
a so t h e c u s t o m a r y w i t h d r a w a l s of b a l a n c e s by c o u n t r y c o r r e s p o n d e n t s
t o p a y f o r a l l o t t e d c e r t i f i c a t e s . As a r e s u l t , r e d u c t i o n s of 165
m i l l i o n s i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and of 15 m i l l i o n s i n t i m e d e p o s i t s
a r e shown, o f f s e t i n p a r t , however, by 132 m i l l i o n s i n t h e t o t a l of
Government b a l a n c e s c a r r i e d . R e p o r t s of member b a n k s i n New York
C i t y show a s i m i l a r development f o r the week, v i z . , r e d u c t i o n s of
99 m i l i o n s i n demand d e p o s i t s , and of 21 m i l l i o n s i n time d e p o s i t s ,
a s a g a i n s t an i n c r e a s e of 67 m i l l i o n s i n Government d e p o s i t s .

and a n i l m i l l i o n r e d u c t i o n i n l o a n s on government s e c u r i t i e s . I n v e s t m e n t s i n c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s show a d e c r e a s e of a b o u t 10 m i l l i o n s
f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and an i n c r e a s e of 3 m i l l i o n s f o r t h e New York
City banks,
Loans s u p p o r t e d by c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s show an i n c r e a s e of
aoout 15 m i l l i o n s , l a r g e l y i n New York C i t y , w h i l e o t h e r ( c h i e f l y
commercial) l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s show a f u r t h e r l i q u i d a t i o n f o r the
week of 59 m i l l i o n s , of wMch t h e New York Banks show 10 m i l l i o n s .
S i n c e J a n u a r y 7, when t h e i t e m was shown f o r the f i r s t t i m e , "Other
l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s " of a l l r e p o r t i n g b a n k s have f a l l e n o f f 152 m i l l i o n s and t h o s e of t h e New York C i t y b a n k s a b o u t 23 m i l l i o n s . T o t a l
l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of a l l r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s show p r a c t i c a l l y
no change a s compared w i t h J a n u a r y l 4 , w h i l e t h e New York banks show
an i n c r e a s e u n d e r t h i s head of n e a r l y 15 m i l l i o n s .
