CONDITION OF MEMBER BANJOS IF LEADING CITIES
Reduction by 62,? m i l l i o n s in : e t o t a l holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , e v i dencing the gradual absorption of these s e c u r i t i e s by the i n v e s t i n g public, and further l i q u i d a t i o n of commercial loans and d i s c o u n t s , together with s u b s t a n t i a l withdrawals of Government and other demand d e p o s i t s and increased borrowings fran the Fede r a l Reserve Banksf are indicated i n the Federal Reserve Board's weekly consolidated
statement of c o n d i t i o n on December 24 of 824 member banks i n leadin? c i t i e s •

As a g a i n s t t h e a b o v e m e n t i o n e d s u b s t a n t i a l d e c r e a s e i n T r e a s u r y c e r t i f i c a t e s ,

United States bond holdings show an increase for the week of about 12 m i l l i o n s and
those of Victory notes an increase of 4 , 2 m i l l i o n s .

Loans supported by corporate

s e c u r i t i e s increased by about 23 m i l l i o n s , while loans secured by Government obligati o n s d e c l i n e d by 13 «2 m i l l i o n s and other loans and investments, composed l a r g e l y of
commercial loans and discounts, - by 71.2 m i l l i o n s . . In consequence of these changes
t o t a l loans and investments of r e p o r t i n g banks are shown 107 *9 m i l l i o n s l e s s than the
week b e f o r e .

For the member banks in New York City there i s shown a reduction of

35*7 m i l l i o n s

i n T r e a s u r y c e r t i f i c a t e s a s a g a i n s t an i n c r e a s e of over 5 m i l l i o n s i n

zillions
other United S t a t e s s e c u r i t i e s , an increase of 1 6 . 9 / i n loans secured by corporate sec u r i t i e s and reductions of 7 .1 m i l l i o n s in loans secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n s
and of 29

m i l l i o n s in other loans and investments.

Total loans and investments of

the New York member banks show a reduction of 50 »1 m i l l i o n s for the week •
Accommodation of reporting banks at the Federal Reserve Banks shows an increase
for the week from 2,032 to 2 , 1 7 6 . 9 m i l l i o n s , or from 12.1 to over 13 per cent of the
banks1 t o t a l loans and investments.

For the New York City banks an increase in acctm-

modation at the l o c a l Federal Reserve Bank from about 753 to 810,7 m i l l i o n s and an increase in the r a t i o of accommodation frcm 13 «4 t o l 4 ,6 per cent are noted.
A l l c l a s s e s of deposits show smaller f i g u r e s than the week before:

Government

d e p o s i t s - by about 56 m i l l i o n s , other demand d e p o s i t s (net) - by l 6 o . 9 m i l l i o n s , and
time d e p o s i t s - by 1 . 6 m i l l i o n s .

For the New York City banks reductions of about 30

m i l l i o n s in Government d e p o s i t s and of $2*7 m i l l i o n s i n other demand d e p o s i t s , as
against an increase of 2 . S m i l l i o n s in-time d e p o s i t s , are shown.
Reserve balances show an increase of 3 6 . 6 m i l l i o n s for a l l reporting member
banks and an increase of l 4 . 6 m i l l i o n s f o r the New York members«

Cash i n v a u l t , as
