H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) January 26, 1955 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended January lg: Increases of $196 million in holdings of Treasury bills and $387 million in demand deposits adjusted, and a decrease of $215 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans decreased in most districts and a total of $74 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were decreases of $4l million in New York City, $20 million in the Dallas District, and $11 million in the Boston District, and an increase of $11 million in the Chicago District. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities decreased $95 million. Holdings of Treasury bills increased $59 million in New York City, $55 million in the San Francisco District, and $35 million in Chicago. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $70 million, of which $59 million was in New York City. Holdings of Treasury notes and of United States Government bonds decreased $13 million and $24 million, respectively. Demand deposits adjusted increased $146 million in New York City, $58 million in the San Francisco District, $48 million in the Boston District, and $38 million in the Dallas District. Time deposits decreased $34 million, all of which was in time deposits of States and political subdivisions. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks decreased in all but two districts. Borrowings decreased $294 million in New York City and a total of $325 million at all reporting member banks. Loans to banks decreased $106 million.
