CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES
The c o n d i t i o n statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n leading c i t i e s
shows t h e f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes f o r t h e week ended December 26:
Increases of
$403 m i l l i o n i n loans a d j u s t e d , $188 m i l l i o n i n holdings of U. S . Government s e c u r i t i e s ,
and $1, l 4 l m i l l i o n i n U. S. Government demand d e p o s i t s , and a decrease of $513 m i l l i o n
i n demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic commercial banks.
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in e i g h t d i s t r i c t s and a net of
$91 mi 1 H o n : during t h e comparable week a year ago, t h e s e loans increased $187 m i l l i o n .
Loans t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing o r c a r r y i n g U . S . Government s e c u r i t i e s
decreased $1?6 m i l l i o n , and t h e i r loans f o r purchasing o r c a r r y i n g "other" s e c u r i t i e s
i ncreased $116 m i l l i o n .
Loans t o s a l e s and p e r s o n a l f i n a n c i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s increased
$292 m i l l i o n and loans t o "other" nonbank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s decreased $12 m i l l i o n ,
as compared with i n c r e a s e s of $ l 4 l m i l l i o n and $26 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y , during the
s i m i l a r week i n 1961.
Real e s t a t e loans increased $15 m i l l i o n .
"Other" loans increased
$35 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s by weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks increased $267 m i l l i o n ,
Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s increased $29 m i l l i o n , and t h e combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and
U. S . Government bonds decreased $108 m i l l i o n .
"Other" s e c u r i t i e s increased $13 m i l l i o n .
Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d decreased $253 m i l l i o n i n New York C i t y , $65 m i l l i o n
i n the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and $54 m i l l i o n i n t h e A t l a n t a D i s t r i c t , but they increased
$71 m i l l i o n i n t h e Chicago D i s t r i c t , $55 m i l l i o n i n t h e Dallas D i s t r i c t , and by smaller
amounts i n s i x o t h e r d i s t r i c t s ; the n e t decrease a t a l l weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks
was $83 m i l l i o n .
Savings d e p o s i t s increased $96 m i l l i o n and "other" time deposits of
i n d i v i d u a l s , p a r t n e r s h i p s , and corporations increased $80 m i l l i o n .
Borrowings of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks from F e d e r a l Reserve Banks
decreased $78 m i l l i o n but borrowings from o t h e r s i n c r e a s e d $387 m i l l i o n .
domestic commercial banks increased $182 m i l l i o n .
