STATEMENT FOR THE PBESS St. 5237 F e d e r a l Reserve Board January 17, 1$2J, For immediate r e l e a s e CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING- CITIES The Federal Reserve B o a r d ' s c o n d i t i o n statement of 683 r e p o r t i n g member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s as of January 12 shows an i n c r e a s e of $55,000,000 i n i n vestments and d e c l i n e s of $167,000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , $29,000,000 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and $ l 4 l , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n borrowings from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks. Member "banks i n New York C i t y r e p o r t e d an i n c r e a s e of $27,000,000 i n i n vestments and r e d u c t i o n s of $132,000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , $83,000,000 i n net demand d e p o s i t s and $42,000,000 i n borrowings from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e bank. Loans on s t o c k s and bonds, i n c l u d i n g U. S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s , were $l4o,000,000 below the January 5 t o t a l . Of t h i s d e c l i n e $107,000,000 was a t banks i n the New York d i s t r i c t , $16,000,000 i n t h e Boston d i s t r i c t and $10,000,000 i n the Cleveland d i s t r i c t . All o t h e r l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s d e c l i n e d $27,000,000, r e d u c t i o n s of $24,000,000 i n the New York d i s t r i c t , $13,000,000 i n t h e Chicago d i s t r i c t and $10,000,000 i n t h e San F r a n c i s c o d i s t r i c t b e i n g o f f s e t i n p a r t by i n c r e a s e s of $15,000,000 and $8,000,000 i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a and Richmond d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y . T o t a l l o a n s t o b r o k e r s and d e a l e r s were $27,000,000 below t h e p r e v i o u s week's f i g u r e , l o a n s f o r t h e i r own account having d e c l i n e d $8$,000,000, while l o a n s f o r out-of-town banks and f o r o t h e r s i n c r e a s e d $51>000,000 and $11,000,000, r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s i n c r e a s e d $24,000,000 d u r i n g the week, of which $22,000,000 was a t r e p o r t i n g banks i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t . Holdi n g s of o t h e r bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s were $31,000,000 above the p r e v i o u s week's f i g u r e a t a l l r e p o r t i n g members and $36,000,000 above a t r e p o r t i n g members i n the New York d i s t r i c t . Net demand d e p o s i t s were $29,000,000 below l a s t week's t o t a l , the l a r g e r d e c l i n e of $91,000,000 i n the New York d i s t r i c t b e i n g p a r t l y o f f s e t by i n c r e a s e s of $28,000,000 i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a d i s t r i c t , 314,000,000 i n t h e Chicago d i s t r i c t and $12,000,000 i n t h e San Francisco d i s t r i c t .
