CONDITION OF MK33R BAMS IN LEADING CITIES
The Federal Reserve Board 1 s condition statement of 655 r e p o r t i n g member banks
i n leading c i t i e s as of January 11 shows an increase f o r the week of $103.000,000
i n investments and d e c l i n e s of $185,000,000 i n loans and discounts of $99,000,000
i n net demand d e p o s i t s , and of $30,000,000 i n borrowings from the Federal reserve
"banks.
Loans on stocks and "bonds, including IT. S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s , were
$229 ,000,000 below the January 4 t o t a l at banks i n the New York d i s t r i c t and
$216,000,000 below at a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. "All other" loans and discounts
increased $24,000,000 a t banks i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t and S28,000,000 at a l l r e p o r t i n g banks.
Holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s , which showed a t o t a l increase of
$99,000,000 f o r the week increased $63,000,000 at the r e p o r t i n g banks in the New
York d i s t r i c t , $20,000,000 i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t and $11,000,000 i n the P h i l a delphia d i s t r i c t . Holdings of other bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s increased
$4,000,000, a l a r g e r increase of $9,000,000 i n the New York d i s t r i c t and smaller
increases i n the Ph ila d e lp h ia and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s being p a r t i a l l y o f f s e t
by decreases i n the other d i s t r i c t s .
Net demand deposits were $99,000,000 l e s s than a week ago at a l l r e p o r t i n g
banks, a decline of $1Si,000,000 i n the New York d i s t r i c t being p a r t l y o f f s e t by
i n c r e a s e s i n most of the other d i s t r i c t s , the p r i n c i p a l i n c r e a s e s being P h i l a delphia $23,000,000, Chicago $19,000,000 and Cleveland $18,000,000. Time dep o s i t s , which at a l l r e p o r t i n g banks were $17,000,000 above the preceding week's
t o t a l , increased $22,000,000 i n the San Francisco d i s t r i c t and $8,000,000 i n the
Chicago d i s t r i c t and declined $7,000,000 i n the Boston d i s t r i c t .
The p r i n c i p a l changes i n borrowings from the Federal reserve banks comprise
declines of $28,000,000 r e p o r t e d f o r member banks i n the New York d i s t r i c t ,
$l6,,000,000 i n the Ph ila d e lp h ia d i s t r i c t and $15,000,000 i n the Cleveland d i s t r i c t .
