STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS

Board of Governors

January 15, 1940

Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in 101 Leading; Cities
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading
cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended January 101 A decrease of $31,000,000 in loans to brokers and dealers in securities, increases of
$10,000,000 in commercial, industrial and agricultural loans, $54,000,000 in holdings of United States Treasury bills, $92,000,000 in reserve balances with Federal
Reserve banks, and $257,000,000 in demand deposits-adjusted, and a decrease of
$204,000,000 in deposits credited to domestic banks.
Commercial, industrial and agricultural loans increased 521,000,000 in New
York City and $10,000,000 in the Chicago district, and declined $5,000,000 each
in the Atlanta and Dallas districts and an aggregate of $11,000,000 in the other
districts. Loans to brokers and dealers in securities declined $19,000,000 in New
York City and $31,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Holdings of United States Treasury bills increased $69,000,000 in the
Chicago district and $54,000,000 at all reporting member banks# Holdings of Treasury notes increased $12,000,000. Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $28,000,000 in Hew York City and $8,000,000 at all reporting member banks,
and declined $10,000,000 in the Cleveland district. Holdings of obligations guaranteed by the United States Government declined $12,000,000. Holdings of "Other
securities" increased $10,000,000.
Demand deposits-adjusted increased $106,000,000 in New York City,$55,000,000
in the Chicago district, $27,000,000 in the Kansas City district, $20,000,000 in
the San Francisco district, and $257,000,000 at all reporting member banks.
Deposits credited to domestic banks declined in nearly all districts, the
principal decreases being $92,000,000 in N6w York City, $23,000,000 in the Chicago
district, and $20,000,000 in the Kansas City district. The total decrease was
$204,000,000. Deposits credited to foreign banks declined $9,000,000.
