CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n of J l S r e p o r t i n g member
banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s , as of January 6, shows d e c l i n e s of $55,000,000 i n l o a n s
and d i s c o u n t s , $ 1 7 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n i n v e s t m e n t s and $145,000,000 in borrowings f r o m the
F e d e r a l r e s e r v e b a n k s , t o g e t h e r w i t h i n c r e a s e s of $ 4 5 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 and $ 1 3 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n
n e t demand and time d e p o s i t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y . Member banks i n New York C i t y r e p o r t e d a d e c l i n e of $1+7,000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s and an i n c r e a s e of
$20,000,000 i n i n v e s t m e n t s , t o g e t h e r w i t h a r e d u c t i o n of $109,000,000 i n borrowings
f r o m the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e bank.
Loans on U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s i n c r e a s e d $ 7 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n t h e New York d i s t r i c t and $ 2 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the Cleveland d i s t r i c t , w h i l e small d e c l i n e s were shown
f o r some of t h e o t h e r d i s t r i c t s . Loans on c o r p o r a t e s t o c k s and bonds f e l l o f f
$72,000,000, r e d u c t i o n s of $ 7 2 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the New York d i s t r i c t , $ 1 4 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the
Chicago d i s t r i c t and $ 1 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n t h e San F r a n c i s c o d i s t r i c t b e i n g o f f s e t i n p a r t
by i n c r e a s e s of $ 1 4 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 and $ 6 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n t h e P h i l a d e l p h i a and Kansas C i t y d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y . All o t h e r l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s went up $ 1 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 . I n c r e a s e s of $ 2 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 and $17,000,000, r e s p e c t i v e l y , were r e p o r t e d by banks i n the
New York and Chicago d i s t r i c t s , while d e c r e a s e s of $ 1 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 each were r e p o r t e d
f o r the Boston and Cleveland d i s t r i c t s .
Investments i n U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s d e c l i n e d $ 7 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 , decreases of
$12,000,000, and $ 1 0 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 f o r the San Francisco and Chicago d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y , being p a r t l y o f f s e t by i n c r e a s e s of $ 1 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the Cleveland d i s t r i c t
and $ 7 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the New York d i s t r i c t . Holdings of other bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s show only small changes i n any of the reserve d i s t r i c t s .
Net demand d e p o s i t s i n c r e a s e d a t banks i n a l l d i s t r i c t s e x c e p t Chicago, Kansas
C i t y and D a l l a s . The p r i n c i p a l i n c r e a s e s i n t h i s i t e m were $15,000,000 and
$12,000,000 i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a and A t l a n t a d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y .
Time d e p o s i t s went up $13,000,000, comparatively small i n c r e a s e s being shown
f o r a l l d i s t r i c t s except San Francisco and Atlanta, where reductions of $10,000,000
and $4,000,000 were reported.
The p r i n c i p a l changes i n borrowings from t h e F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks were r e d u c t i o n s of $ 1 0 9 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 by banks i n t h e New York d i s t r i c t , $ 2 4 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n the
Boston d i s t r i c t and $12,000,000 i n the Richmond d i s t r i c t .
