F e d e r a l Reserve Board J a n u a r y 11, 1923- CONDITION OF MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES Aggregate i n c r e a s e s of $179,000,000 of loans and i n v e s t m e n t s , accompanied by net withdrawals of $120,000,000 of Government b a l a n c e s and i n c r e a s e s of $272,000,000 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and of $40,000,000 i n time d e p o s i t s , a r e i n d i c a t e d i n t h e F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s weekly c o n s o l i d a t e d statement of cond i t i o n of J a n u a r y 3 of 783 member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . I n p l a c e of the s i n g l e item "United S t a t e s bonds" shown l a s t year t h e s t a t e m e n t i n t r o d u c e s t h r e e new d i v i s i o n s , v i z . , "U. S. pre-war b o n d s , " i . e . , l a r g e l y bonds securing n a t i o n a l bank c i r c u l a t i o n , "U. S. L i b e r t y bonds" and "(J, S. Treasury bonds." Of t h e t o t a l i n c r e a s e of $261,000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , over oneh a l f , v i z . , $134,000,000, i s shown f o r loans secured by s t o c k s and bonds. The c o r r e s p o n d i n g f i g u r e f o r the New York C i t y banks i s $139,000,000 out of a t o t a l l o a n i n c r e a s e of $212,000,000. These i n c r e a s e s a r e o f f s e t i n pfirt by n e t l i q u i d a t i o n of $48,000,000 of Government and $35,000,000 of c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s , c h i e f l y by the banks o u t s i d e of New York C i t y . Borrowings of t h e r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s from t h e F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks show an i n c r e a s e from $369,000,000 t o $390,000,000, or from 2 . 3 to 2 . 4 per c e n t of t h e i r t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s . For member banks i n New York City i n c r e a s e from $82,000,000 to $128,000,000 i n t o t a l accommodation a t the l o c a l r e s e r v e bank and from 1.6 to 2 . 4 p e r cent i n t h e r a t i o of accommodation i s noted. Reserve b a l a n c e s of t h e r e p o r t i n g i n s t i t u t i o n s , i n keeping w i t h t h e s u b s t a n t i a l i n c r e a s e i n n e t demand and time d e p o s i t s , show an i n c r e a s e of $64,000,000, while cash i n v a u l t , composed l a r g e l y of F e d e r a l r e s e r v e n o t e s , d e c l i n e d by about $32,000,000. Corresponding changes f o r t h e New York C i t y ' banks i n c l u d e an i n c r e a s e of $26,000,000 i n r e s e r v e b a l a n c e s and a r e d u c t i o n of $22,000,000 i n cash on hand.
