COALITION OF MEMBER BANKS
Large a d d i t i o n s to n e t demand d e p o s i t s , r e p r e s e n t i n g a p p a r e n t l y to a l a r g e e x t e n t end-of~year dividend and i n t e r e s t payments, a l s o
i n c r e a s e s of 72«2 m i l l i o n s i n h o l d i n g s of Government s e c u r i t i e s and of
7 7 • ! m i l l i o n s i n loans secured by s t o c k s and bonds, a r e i n d i c a t e d by the
F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s weekly s t a t e m e n t of . c o n d i t i o n on January 2 of 79&
member "batiks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s .
Holdings of the d i f f e r e n t c l a s s e s of Government s e c u r i t i e s show
i n c r e a s e s f o r the week i n the f o l l o w i n g amounts: U. S» bonds, i n c l u d i n g
L i b e r t y bonds, » 4 , 6 m i l l i o n s ; V i c t o r y n o t e s - 0 . 1 m i l l i o n
and Treasury
c e r t i f i c a t e s - b j »5 millions,. War paper on hand, e x c l u s i v e of r e d i s c o u n t s
w i t h F e d e r a l Reserve t a n k s , shows a nominal d e c l i n e of 0 , 2 m i l l i o n .
Tot a l loans and investments, e x c l u s i v e of r e d i s c o u n t s , show an i n c r e a s e f o r
t h e week of 171*5 m i l l i o n s of which 135*2 m i l l i o n s c o n s t i t u t e s t h e share
of the New York City members« During the week the r e p o r t i n g banks decreased the amount of t h e i r c o l l a t e r a l n o t e s d i s c o u n t e d w i t h F e d e r a l Reserve
banks by 19«7 m i l l i o n s and i n c r e a s e d the volume of paper r e d i s c o u n t e d w i t h
the F e d e r a l Reserve banks ty about £>7 m i l l i o n s . Of t h e t o t a l of 913 *-9 m i l l i o n s of c o l l a t e r a l n o t e s h e l d under discount f o r r e p o r t i n g banks a l l but
7*1 m i l l i o n s was war paper, while of the 95b»6 m i l l i o n s of b i l l s h e l d under r e d l e o o u n t f o r these banks war paper was only 303*1 m i l l i o n s *
Government d e p o s i t s show an i n c r e a s e f o r the week of 4g ,7 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and of 85*2 m i l l i o n s f o r the Now York City
banks, time d e p o s i t s were 3^*5 m i l l i o n s l a r g e r t h a n t h e week b e f o r e , whilo^
o t h e r demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) i n c r e a s e d about 435 m i l l i o n s , a l l c l a s s e s of
banks r e p o r t i n g l a r g e gains under t h i s head# Reserve balances w i t h the
F e d e r a l Reserve banks, i n keeping w i t h the l a r g e i n c r e a s e i n t h e r e p o r t ing batiks* d e p o s i t s , show an i n c r e a s e of 9 7 m i l l i o n s , of which 55*9 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s the i n c r e a s e f o r the New York C i t y member banks. Cash i n
v a u l t sho^ys an i n c r e a s e of 1»7 m i l l i o n s , though the banks i n t h e F e d e r a l
