CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The F e d e r a l R e s e r v e B o a r d 1 s s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n of 7^9 r e p o r t i n g member
banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s as of December 23 snows an i n c r e a s e d u r i n g t n e week of
$ 4 9 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s and a d e c l i n e of $ 4 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n i n v e s t m e n t s .
These changes were accompanied by a r e d u c t i o n of $ 1 9 3 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and i n c r e a s e s of $ 2 3 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 and $127,000,000, r e s p e c t i v e l y , i n time d e p o s i t s and borrowings f r o m the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e b a n k s . Member banks i n New York
C i t y r e p o r t e d an i n c r e a s e of $97>000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s and a d e c l i n e
of $34,000,000 i n i n v e s t m e n t s , t o g e t h e r w i t h i n c r e a s e s of $ 1 6 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n time
d e p o s i t s and $ 7 9 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 i n borrowings f r o m t h e F e d e r a l r e s e r v e bank.
Loans on U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s i n c r e a s e d $ 6 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 , of which
$4,000,000 was r e p o r t e d by banks i n t h e New York d i s t r i c t . Loans on c o r p o r a t e
s t o c k s and bonds went up $ 9 0 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 , the l a r g e r i n c r e a s e of $ 1 0 5 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 shown
f o r the New York d i s t r i c t b e i n g p a r t l y o f f s e t by small r e d u c t i o n s i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a , Cleveland and Kansas C i t y d i s t r i c t s . All o t h e r l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s
d e c l i n e d a t banks i n a l l d i s t r i c t s except C l e v e l a n d , Richmond and D a l l a s * The

I n v e s t m e n t s i n U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s were $ 6 2 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 l e s s t h a n a
week ago. Of t h i s d e c r e a s e $ 4 0 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 was r e p o r t e d by banks i n the Na* York
d i s t r i c t , and $Q,000,000 and $ 6 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 by banks i n t h e Cleveland and San F r a n c i s c o d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of o t h e r bonds, s t o c k s and s e c u r i t i e s
went up $ 2 1 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 , of which $ 1 0 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 was r e p o r t e d by banks i n t h e Chicago
district.
