bank d e p o s i t s , a r e i n d i c a t e d i n t h e F e d e r a l R e s e r v e B o a r d ' s c o n s o l i d a t e d s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n on J a n u a r y 28 of 82$ member b a n k s
i n leading, c i t i e s ,
A l l c l a s s e s of l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s show s u b s t a n t i a l r e d u c t i o n s
f o r the week: Loans s e c u r e d by U. S. Government o b l i g a t i o n s - by
a b o u t ,17 m i l l i o n s ; l o a n s s e c u r e d by c o r p o r a t e o b l i g a t i o n s - by 29
m i l l i o n s , and o t h e r ( l a r g e l y commercial) l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s by 49
m i l l i o n s . The t o t a l r e d u c t i o n f o r a l l c l a s s e s of l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s was 9 5 m i l l i o n s , of w h i c h 52 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s t h e r e d u c t i o n

by t h e Government, - a d e c r e a s e of 34 m i l l i o n s . For t h e New York
C i t y banks c o r r e s p o n d i n g d e c r e a s e s of 2 m i l l i o n s i n U . S . bonds and
V i c t o r y n o t e s a n d of 13 m i l l i o n s i n c e r t i f i c a t e s a r e n o t e d , i n v e s t m e n t s i n c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s show a r e d u c t i o n of 8 m i l l i o n s f o r
a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and of 5 m i l l i o n s f o r the member b a n k s i n New
York C i t y . The l a t t e r r e p o r t a d e c l i n e of 72 m i l l i o n s i n t o t a l
l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s ! ojr over one*-half of t h e r e d u c t i o n shown u n d e r
t h i s head f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks.
Accommodation of a l l r e p o r t i n g banks a t t h e R e s e r v e Banks shows
a r e d u c t i o n f o r the week f r o m 1,93'+ to 1 , 9 0 8 m i l l i o n s , or f r o m 1 1 . 8
t o 1 1 . 7 p e r c e n t of t h e b a n k s ' t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s . For
t h e New York C i t y b a n k s , m a i n l y b e c a u s e of t h e l a r g e w i t h d r a w a l s of
bank b a l a n c e s by c o u n t r y c o r r e s p o n d e n t s , b o r r o w i n g s f r o m t h e l o c a l
F e d e r a l R e s e r v e Bank show an i n c r e a s e f r o m 79*+ to 826 m i l l i o n s , or
from l 4 . 6 t o 1 5 . 3 p e r c e n t of the t o t a l l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of
t h e s e b a n k s . S i n c e O c t o b e r 15, when a maximum t o t a l of 1 7 , 2 8 4 m i l l i o n s
was r e a c h e d , l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s of r e p o r t i n g banks d e c l i n e d by
987 m i l l i o n s , w h i l e t h e i r accommodation a t t h e F e d e r a l R e s e r v e Banks
was r e d u c e d by 3^+1 m i l l i o n s . For t h e same p e r i o d member b a n k s i n New
York C i t y show a r e d u c t i o n of U53 m i l l i o n s i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s ,
a s a g a i n s t a d e c l i n e of o n l y 22 m i l l i o n s i n t h e i r accommodation a t
t h e l o c a l R e s e r v e Bank.
Government d e p o s i t s of a l l r e p o r t i n g b a n k s show a d e c r e a s e f o r
t h e week of 64 m i l l i o n s , n e t demand d e p o s i t s d e c l i n e d by a b o u t 112
m i l l i o n s , w h i l e time d e p o s i t s show a nominal i n c r e a s e . For t h e New
York C i t y b a n k s , an a g g r e g a t e d e c r e a s e of 98 m i l l i o n s i n n e t demand
d e p o s i t s i s shown, c a u s e d l a r g e l y by t h e r e d u c t i o n of b a l a n c e s due
t o o u t s i d e b a n k s , w h i l e government d e p o s i t s a t t h e New York banks
were 34 m i l l i o n s l e s s and time d e p o s i t s about 15 m i l l i o n s l e s s t h a n
on t h e p r e v i o u s F r i d a y .
In k e e p i n g w i t h t h e l a r g e d e c r e a s e s i n t h e i r demand d e p o s i t s ,
t h e r e p o r t i n g b a n k s show a g g r e g a t e r e d u c t i o n s of 23 m i l l i o n s i n t h e i r
r e s e r v e b a l a n c e s , t h e c o r r e s p o n d i n g r e d u c t i o n f o r t h e New York C i t y
banks b e i n g a b o u t 1 2 m i l l i o n s . Cash i n v a u l t shows a f u r t h e r d e c l i n e
of over 8 m i l l i o n s , l a r g e l y o u t s i d e of New York C i t y , t h e t o t a l of
337 m i l l i o n s b e i n g o n l y s l i g h t l y i n e x c e s s of 3 p e r c e n t of t h e n e t
demand d e p o s i t s of the r e p o r t i n g b a n k s .
