CONDITION OF MEMBER BANTS IN LEADING CITIES
The F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d ' s s t a t e m e n t of c o n d i t i o n of %l6 r e p o r t i n g member
banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s a s of February 17 shows r e d u c t i o n s of $45,000,000 i n l o a n s
and d i s c o u n t s , $24,000,000 in i n v e s t m e n t s and $55,000,000 in n e t demand d e p o s i t s ,
t o g e t h e r w i t h an i n c r e a s e of $15,000,000 i n time d e p o s i t s and of $10,000,000 in
borrowings from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e b a n k s . Member banks i n New York City r e p o r t e d
r e d u c t i o n s of $37,000,000 i n l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , $11,000,000 i n i n v e s t m e n t s and
$72,000,000 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s , t o g e t h e r w i t h an i n c r e a s e o f $16,000,000 i n
borrowings from t h e F e d e r a l r e s e r v e bank.
Loans on c o r p o r a t e s t o c k s and bonds f e l l o f f $61,000,000, the l a r g e r d e c l i n e
of $72,000,000 r e p o r t e d by banks i n the New York d i s t r i c t b e i n g o f f s e t i n p a r t by
r e l a t i v e l y small i n c r e a s e s i n the Boston, Cleveland and Chicagp d i s t r i c t s .
"All
o t h e r " l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s went up $17,000,000, the p r i n c i p a l changes i n t h i s item
b e i n g an i n c r e a s e of $35,000,000 a t banks i n the New York d i s t r i c t and a r e d u c t i o n
o f $12,000,000 a t banks i n the Boston d i s t r i c t . T o t a l l o a n s t o b r o k e r s and
d e a l e r s , secured by s t o c k s and bonds, made by New York City r e p o r t i n g oanks were
$1,000,000 l a r g e r t h a n a week ago. The amount of such l o a n s made by t h e New York
City banks f o r t h e i r own account f e l l o f f $40,000,000, w h i l e those made f o r the
account of o u t - o f - t o w n banks i n c r e a s e d $13,000,000 and those f o r t h e account of
0 t h e r s $28,000,000.
I n v e s t m e n t s o3f r e p o r t i n g members were $24,000,000 l e s s t h a n a week ago, the
p r i n c i p a l d e c r e a s e s o f $9,000,000 and $5,000,000 b e i n g r e p o r t e d by banks in the
New York and Boston d i s t r i c t s , r e s p e c t i v e l y , i n h o l d i n g s of s e c u r i t i e s o t h e r thai}
Government o b l i g a t i o n s .
Net demand d e p o s i t s were $55,000,000 l e s s than a week ago.^ Banks in t h e
New York d i s t r i c t r e p o r t e d a r e d u c t i o n o f $68,000,000 and those in the St. I o u i s
d i s t r i c t a r e d u c t i o n of $ 9 , 0 0 0 , 0 0 0 , while banks i n t h e Cleveland and Kansas City
d i s t r i c t s r e p o r t e d i n c r e a s e s of $14,000,000 and $7,000,000, r e s p e c t i v e l y . Time
d e p o s i t s went up $15,000,000, of which $7,000,000 was i n t h e Chicago d i s t r i c t and
$5,000,000 in t h e New York d i s t r i c t .
The p r i n c i p a l changes in borrowings from the F e d e r a l r e s e r v e banks include
i n c r e a s e s of $10,000,000 and $7,000,000 in the New York and S t . Louie d i s t r i c t s ,
r e s p e c t i v e l y , and a r e d u c t i o n of $9,000,000 in the Boston d i s t r i c t .
