Aggregate i n c r e a s e s of $$1,000,000 i n loans secured by corporate o b l i g a t i o n s
and of $18,000,000 i n other loans and d i s c o u n t s , o f f s e t i n part by n e t l i q u i d a t i o n
of $11,000,000 of Government s e c u r i t i e s , are shown i n the Federal Reserve Board*s
weekly statement of condition on February l 4 of 778 member banks i n leading c i t i e s ,
Member banks i n New York City report i n c r e a s e s of $29,000,000 i n loans on corporate s e c u r i t i e s and of $10,000,000 i n other loans and d i s c o u n t s , as against a
reduction of $17,000,000 i n investments, mainly Government s e c u r i t i e s . Since the
c l o s e of l a s t year loans secured by corporate o b l i g a t i o n s shown by the reporting
banks have d e c l i n e d about $47,000,000, while a l l o t h e r , l a r g e l y commercial, loans
and discounts have increased by about $226,000,000. For the same period the New
York City members show a decline of $57,000,000 i n loans on corporate s e c u r i t i e s
as against a r i s e of $1IS,000,000 i n a l l other loans and discounts^
Government d e p o s i t s declined by about $20,000,000, time d e p o s i t s increased by
about $5,000,000,while net demand deposits show an advance of $127,000,000, l a r g e l y
outside of New York City, Borrowings of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s from the
Federal reserve banks increased from $357,000,000 to. $446,000,000, or from 2 . 2 to
2.7 per cent of t h e i r t o t a l loans and investments.
For member banks i n New York
City an increase from $168,000,000 to $234,000,000 i n borrowings from the l o c a l
reserve bank and from 3»2 to 4 , 5 per cent i n the r a t i o of these borrowings to
combined loans and investments i s noted. Since December 27 of l a s t year accommodation lof a l l reporting banks at the reserve banks has gone up over $70,000,000,
while l i k e accommodation of the New York City banks has increased about $150,000,000,
Reserve balances of the reporting i n s t i t u t i o n s show an increase f o r the week
of $54,000,000, while cash i n vault rose about $3,000,000. Corresponding changes
for the New York City banks comprise an increase of $27,000,000 i n reserve b a l ances and a nominal change i n cash.
