t H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) February 18, 1953 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER B A M S IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended February 11: Decreases of $179 million in holdings of Treasury bills, $208 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks and $239 million in demand deposits adjusted, and an increase of $173 million in United States Government deposits. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in seven districts and decreased in the other five, resulting in a net increase of $34 million at all reporting member banks; the principal changes were increases of $19 million in the Boston District, $l6 million in New York City, and $12 million in the Philadelphia District, and a decrease of $13 million in Chicago. Changes according to industry are available in another press release. Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $47 million in Chicago, $36 million in New York City, $31 million in the Dallas District, and by smaller amounts in all but two of the other districts. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $66 million in New York City and $69 million at all reporting member bank:; Holdings of Treasury notes and of United States Government bonds decreased $32 million and $12 million, respectively. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $117 million in the San Francisco District, $108 million in New York City, and $4l million in the Cleveland District. Time deposits increased $24 million. United States Government deposits increased in nearly all districts. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks decreased $91 million. Borrowings decreased $89 million at all reporting member banks.
