CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended February 4: Decreases
of $195 million in loans adjusted, $172 million in holdings of U. S. Government
securities, and $1,080 million in demand deposits adjusted, and an increase of
$563 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks.
Commercial and industrial loans decreased in most districts and a total of
$111 million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $50 million in New York City, $15 millioy in the Cleveland District, and $13 million in
the Chicago District. Changes according to industry appear in another press
release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government and other securities decreased $105 million.
Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $45 million.
Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $159 million and U. S. Government bonds
decreased $57 million. Holdings of "other" securities increased $51 million.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased $357 million in New York City, $214 million in the Chicago District, $167 million in the San Francisco District,
$68 million in the Atlanta District, and $62 million in the Cleveland District.
U. S. Government deposits increased $97 million.
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $28 million and borrowings
from others decreased $68 million. Loans to banks decreased $53 million.
