BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) H.4.2 February 11, 1959 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended February 4: Decreases of $195 million in loans adjusted, $172 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities, and $1,080 million in demand deposits adjusted, and an increase of $563 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in most districts and a total of $111 million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $50 million in New York City, $15 millioy in the Cleveland District, and $13 million in the Chicago District. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government and other securities decreased $105 million. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $45 million. Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $159 million and U. S. Government bonds decreased $57 million. Holdings of "other" securities increased $51 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $357 million in New York City, $214 million in the Chicago District, $167 million in the San Francisco District, $68 million in the Atlanta District, and $62 million in the Cleveland District. U. S. Government deposits increased $97 million. Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $28 million and borrowings from others decreased $68 million. Loans to banks decreased $53 million.
