CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 24; Decreases of
$232 million in holdings of Treasury bills and $1,111 million in demand deposits
adjusted, and increases of $436 million in United States Government deposits and
$544 million in borrowings.
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in six districts and
decreased in the other six, with a net increase of $72 million at all reporting
member banks; the principal changes were increases of $32 million in New York City,
$27 million in Chicago, and $18 million in the Cleveland District. Changes according to industry are available in another press release. Loans for purchasing or
carrying securities increased $98 million. Real estate loans increased $23 million.
Loans to banks decreased $115 million. "Other loans" increased $49 million.
Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $50 million in the Kansas City District,
$45 million in the Richmond District, $43 million in the Cleveland District, and
by smaller amounts in most of the other districts. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $21 million and holdings of Treasury notes increased $14 million. Holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $41 million in the San Francisco District and a total of $65 million at all reporting
member banks.
Demand deposits adjusted decreased $666 million in New York City, $165 million
in the Cleveland District, $75 million in the San Francisco District, and by soallei
amounts in nearly all of the other districts. Time deposits increased $52 million.
Demand deposits credited to domestic banks decreased $159 million.
Borrowings increased $293 million in New York City and $131 million in Chicago.
