H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) December 30, 1953 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 23: An increase of $23U million in commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans, and decreases of $2^6 million in holdings of Treasury bills, $441 million in demand deposits adjusted, and $350 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks. Commercial^ industrial, and agricultural loans increased in most districts and the total increase was about the amount of the new issue of Commodity Credit Corporation certificates of interest purchased by weekly reporting member banks; the principal increases were $119 million in the Chicago District, $29 million in the Kansas City District, $23 million in the Cleveland District, and $17 million in the San Francisco District. Changes in commercial and industrial loans, according to industry, appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying securities decreased $120 million, and loans to others for the same purpose increased $70 million. The decreases in holdings of Treasury bills were largely in New York, Chicago, and the San Francisco District. Holdings of Treasury notes and of United States Government bonds decreased $59 million and $26 million, respectively. Holdings of "other" securities increased $35 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $381 million in New York City, $86 million in the San Francisco District, $32 million in Chicago, and $28 million in the Kansas City District, and they increased $38 million in the Philadelphia District and $24 million in the Cleveland District, Time deposits increased $57 million. Borrowings increased $169 million in the Chicago District but they decreased $97 million in New York City.
