CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended December 22: Decreases of
$112 million in loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying securities,
#188 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, and $216 million in
demand deposits credited to domestic banks*
Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in most districts and
a total of $61* million at all reporting member banks; the principal increases were
$17 million in the Cleveland District, $16 million in the Chicago District, and
$13 million each in the Richmond and San Francisco districts. Changes according to
industry appear in another press release. "Other" loans increased §62 million.
Holdings of Treasury bills increased $55 million in the San Francisco District
and $30 million in the Kansas City District, but they decreased $30 million in1
Chicago; there was a net increase of $78 million at all reporting member banks.
Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness increased $53 million, of which
$31 million was in the Chicago District. Holdings of Treasury notes and of United
States Government bonds decreased $71 million and $29 million, respectively*
