R e d u c t i o n of 209.2 m i l l i o n s i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s , due t o payment of the
December 15 i n s t a l l m e n t Of income and e x c e s s p r o f i t s t a x e s , and an i n c r e a s e of
3 5 1 , 9 m i l l i o n s i n Government d e p o s i t s , a l s o an a d d i t i o n of 155*2 m i l l i o n s t o t o t a l
loans and i n v e s t m e n t s ,

Holdings of U. S . bonds d e c l i n e d 3 . 1 m i l l i o n s and of V i c t o r y n o t e s - 9*7 m i l l i o n s , w h i l e T r e a s u r y c e r t i f i c a t e s on band, a s the r e s u l t of the new i s s u e s p l a c e d
on'December 15, went up 5 1 , 6 m i l l i o n s , of which only a b o u t 6 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s
t h e i n c r e a s e f o r t h e New York City banks.
The amount of wax paper h e l d ( e x c l u s -
i v e of r e d i s c o u n t s ) was about 2 m i l l i o n s l a r g e r t h a n t h e week b e f o r e , n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g a d e c r e a s e of 5*2 m i l l i o n s r e p o r t e d ty the Nev. York banks•
Loans s e c u r e d by s t o c k s and bonds show an i n c r e a s e f o r t h e weak of 2 1 , 1 m i l l i o n s f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks and of 30*1 m i l l i o n s f o r the New York City banks
alone, w h i l e a l l o t h e r l o a n s and i n v e s t m e n t s were 93*3 m i l l i o n s l a r g e r t h a n the
week b e f o r e .
The r a t i o of war s e c u r i t i e s and war p a p e r t o the b a n k s ' t o t a l l o a n s and
i n v e s t m e n t s i n c r e a s e d from 17 »4 t o 17 *5 P o r cent f o r a l l r e p o r t i n g banks, b u t dec l i n e d from 2 1 . 1 to 2 0 . 6 p e r cent f o r the New York City b a n k s .
Reserve balances w i t h the F e d e r a l Reserve Banks show a d e c l i n e of 35«5 m i l l i o n s
f o r the week, w h i l e cash i n v a u l t i n c r e a s e d by about 10 m i l l i o n s .
were 9»7 m i l l i o n s , l a r g e r t h a n the week b e f o r e .
